Harshal Ganpatrao Hayatnagarkar

Greetings!

My name is Harshal Ganpatrao Hayatnagarkar, currently working at ThoughtWorks Technologies India, as the lead computer scientist with Engineering for Research practice in Pune, where we exclusively collaborate with scientific organizations on their computational problems.

I am interested in agent-based models and simulations to understand and explain large-scale social dynamics and its possible applications in policy making. We are trying to apply the learning to simulate emergency response in case of large-scale disasters.

I completed my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering in 2001 from Shri Guru Gobind Singhji Institute of Engineering and Technology (now autonomous but formerly Shri Guru Gobind Singhji College of Engineering and Technology and affiliated with Swami Ramamand Teerth Marathwada University). I returned to academics after gathering experience in industry for more than a decade with Tata Consultancy Services, India and Verizon Data Services, India as software architect and researcher. I am also a PhD candidate at Virginia Tech‘s Department of Computer Science, currently on leave of absence. My advisor is Dr. Madhav Marathe. While working as a Graduate Research Assistant at Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory, I was mentored by Dr. Madhav, Dr. Keith Bisset, Dr. Anil Vulikanti, Dr. Christopher Kuhlman.

Apart from research and academics, I enjoy reading non-fiction and science-fiction, listening to music, discussing and debating on interesting topics. Also an avid reader of Indian and comparative mythology. Like playing city simulation and real-time strategy computer games and recently exploring my new interest in archery. Passionate about Modern Evolutionary Synthesis, a collection of theories that explain origin and evolution of Life on the Earth.

I am native of city of Nanded from Maharashtra, India, and live in Pune. Marathi is my native language. I carry reading/writing/speaking fluency in Marathi along with Hindi and English languages.
